The department fosters an inclusive and collaborative environment with the culture of a research institute. Graduate students are active researchers and respected colleagues who regularly publish articles in leading scholarly journals, such as Philosophy of Science and the British Journal for the Philosophy of Science, often in collaboration with one another and with LPS faculty.

UCI Aldrich Park

Using methods from philosophy, logic, and the sciences themselves, scholars in UCI’s LPS department investigate what we are able to know about the world through science, and precisely how it is that science enables us to know it. LPS faculty annually instruct and mentor a small, select group of graduate students who go on to teaching and research careers at top educational institutions around the world. LPS also has strong connections with many science departments, including physics, biology, mathematics, economics, computer science, cognitive science, lan¬guage sciences, and mathematical behavioral sciences.

Graduate students from UCI’s LPS program have gone on to professorial and professional posts at esteemed universities and organizations across the globe.

UCI’s campus is beautiful, rotating around Aldrich Park, a 19-acre botanical garden. The campus is located less than 10 miles from Newport Beach, is the #1 university doing the most for the American dream (New York Times College Access Index), and the #7 ranked public university in the U.S. (U.S. News & World Report).

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT - Why UCI Logic & Philosophy of Science?

When Elliott Chen was thinking about where he wanted to pursue his graduate degree in logic & philosophy of science, UC Irvine was at the top of his list.

"UCI is one of the best places in the world to study philosophy of physics, and after comparing the exceptional programs, I came to campus for a visit and met the faculty," he says. "I got the sense that this place has a real community. Graduate students are treated like junior faculty members, are very active in classes, and help co-author papers with faculty and other graduate students. UCI really is a warm place where people care about each other."

"The department really is a supportive, collaborative community," says Elliott. "You also have the added benefit of working with colleagues in the Department of Philosophy, so you can talk with people seemingly in the same field studying something completely different, and that's really cool and presents a great opportunity to learn from one another."

"This was something that really surprised me," Elliott says. "From day one, you're thought of as a researcher in your field, not just a student."
